The Impact of Acne Vulgaris on Quality of Life Among Rural Patients - A Cross Sectional Study
Keywords:
Acne vulgaris, Dermatology life quality index, Quality of lifeAbstract
Background: Acne vulgaris affects about 85 percent of adolescents, often extending into adulthood. Acne causes a significant psychological comorbidity, but there is a limited data available especially in rural Indian patients.
Aim of the study: The aim of the study was to detect the impact of acne on quality of life and assess correlation of it's severity and complications with Quality of Life (QoL).
Materials and methods: This was a cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study in 60 patients above 15 years of age with acne vulgaris attending the outpatient department of our referral hospital between June and October 2023. Acne vulgaris and its sequelae were graded, and QoL was assessed by using Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) questionnaire. Statistical analysis was done to assess any correlation of DLQI with acne and it's sequelae.
Results: Overall mean DLQI scores was 5.46 which showed no significant difference between the genders. There was significant association seen between severity of acne grades and DLQI scores (p< 0.05) while with all other parameters it was non significant.
Conclusion: Acne has a significant negative impact on quality of life which calls for a holistic approach to treat it.
